2023 State Champions
Congratulations to Mission Viejo High School! They won the 2023 California State Division 1-AA
Championship this past season! This is the 2nd state championship in the
team’s history, having taken the title before in 2015. The Diablos went into the
game with a 13-3 record for the 2023 season, against the 11-3 De La Salle High
School Spartans. The final score was 24-14. Played at Saddleback College Stadium,
this game was the 6th consecutive defeat for the Spartans in the State
Championships, though they have won State 7 times before. The Spartans made
the first touchdown of the game, but the Diablos began a scoring streak just
before halftime that led to the win. This victory not only gave them the
Championship but an 8-game winning streak.
Quoted in The Orange County Register, offensive tackle Mark Schroller said “We
all came together and played all together, and it just worked miracles… The
(offensive) line came together. We had some injuries we had to deal with but I’m
so proud of all of them. I’m proud of our quarterbacks. I’m proud of our running
backs. I’m proud of our defense. I’m proud of everyone. Everyone just showed
improvement across the season, and they all just got better and better.” Head
Coach Chad Johnson, also quote by The Orange County Register, said “The biggest thing we talk about all the time is perseverance, leadership, character, toughness, and I think that’s what our guys showed. We were honest and got
better at what we needed to fix and went on a run… To beat De La Salle in Division
1 in the state championship of California, is pretty special. There’s a (darn) movie
made about them.”
